Entrepreneurship can look like an easy life for many people, as being the CEO of a company looks very appealing. You have people working in your employ and you can set a time to go to the office. Some even see it as a way to end their “suffering” from a 9-to-5 job.

Looking at it from the outside in, not many know the huge responsibility that comes with having your own business, plus the amount of work and stress involved. There is a lot of pressure that comes with running an efficient business and the emotional exhaustion of time spent on the job puts entrepreneurs at risk for serious mental health issues.

This mental strain, if not prevented, may damage their productivity and their quality of life.

1. Exercise.
This may seem unbelievable but it is true. Our body needs this physical therapy to keep our bodies healthy and prevent illnesses. Exercise is also essential to maintain mental fitness and reduce stress. Studies show that exercising regularly is very effective in reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration. Living with anxiety often results in tight, tense muscles. Even if you’re buried in work, carrying this tension can cause bigger problems down the road.

To let go of this built-up stress, try maintaining a regular exercising routine. While many people are scared of hitting the gym, you don’t need to spend tons of money on gym fees, or hours running on the treadmill. You can always jog around the block, or even do lunges on your way to and from the bathroom. Regular aerobic exercise boosts the part of your brain responsible for memory and learning. When stress affects the brain, other parts of your body feel the effect as well. And if your body feels better, so does your mind. It is best to take out 30minutes or more of your time to exercise and avoid a mental breakdown.

 

2. Meditate.
Waking up every morning to join the daily hustle can be stressful. Meditation is a good way to de-stress after a hectic day at the office, it increases brain function and helps people relax in such a busy world. Studies have shown that meditation is very effective in removing clutters from your mind. The best part is, it fits into your schedule as you see fit—it can take as little as three minutes, or you can work your way up to 20.

Meditation also helps to decrease anxiety, depression, rewire your brain to achieve a quiet and stress-free experience. It also helps you concentrate better. Meditating is just another easy way to hit the mental “off” button. Relaxing music can be very helpful. A few minutes of shut-down is better than nothing at all, so don’t hesitate to try it out.

 

3. Get enough sleep.
“To be successful, you have to lose sleep.” This is actually very true but that is not very good for your physical and mental health. It could even affect your productivity at work. We tend to overwork ourselves sometimes and sacrifice our sleep, getting up 8 hours to 10 hours sleep a night will help you rest your body and your brain. Sleep deprivation contributes to reduced decision making ability and stunts creativity. It is advisable to build a routine that includes better sleeping habits.

Many entrepreneurs take care of their businesses at the expense of their own self. You should know that unless you take care of yourself, you can’t follow through on your commitments to others.

 

4. Spend time with your friends.
Spending time with friends will keep you healthier and help you de-stress better. Some studies show that people with close friends have a greater ability to fight disease than people who are solitary. So make friendship a priority. Create time to spend with your friends, you could go out with them to a bar, a restaurant or even social gatherings. And whenever you can’t get together with them, use the phone to keep in touch with them. It is always good to have friends to hang out with especially when you’re feeling down or stressed at work. You should always surround yourself with positive people. Surrounding yourself with negative people affects your thoughts and could contribute to low self-esteem, low self-confidence and even depression. Support from close friends is very good for your mental health, especially on days your confidence is low.

 

5. Do more of what makes you happy.
Your happiness rate plays a huge role in your mental health. Stress is your body and mind’s way of telling you that you’re over-worked or mentally tired and unhappy. Being unhappy affects your thoughts, which leads to negative thoughts and low self-esteem. Your perspective changes negatively, which in turn affects your productivity towards your work and your employees. Depression becomes present in your life.
