Instagram is by far one of the fastest growing social media platforms with 700 million monthly active users. NapoleonCat, a social media analytics tool, estimates there are 3.6 million Nigerians on the app, with over 80% being between the ages 18-40. Now that’s a whole lot of people to reach and an abundance of potential customers.

But not many entrepreneurs have had a successful outing marketing their brands on the platform. In this post are five things you can do to grow your new account and tweak your online marketing efforts as a business owner on Instagram.


  • Add value: People are always drawn to value. If you are sharing content that is educative, informative, inspiring, humorous or entertaining, Instagram users will gravitate towards your business page. Some brands make the mistake of always pushing sales messages as a way to generate sales which should be their last marketing activity. Focus on helping your followers first, and they’ll be loyal enough to do business with you in the future.
  • Diversify your content: It has been estimated that by 2019, video will be responsible for 80% of internet traffic. Apparently, for your Instagram page to be interesting enough to old and new followers, you should incorporate videos in your marketing. Also, try not to focus only running a product-centric page. Rather, explore other types of content like behind the scenes and industry news.


  • Humanize your brand: If there is one thing that drives conversion, it is authenticity. People love to align with a brand that is honest enough to share their highs and lows, strengths and weaknesses. To this end, show followers the team behind your business and let them see what an average day is like at the office.
  • Carry out a hashtag research: Hashtags are the ultimate cheat sheet on Instagram. Posts that carry at least one hashtag average 12.6% more engagement. They are an organic way to receive engagements on your posts and increase your posts reach. There is a catch however which is to mind which hashtags you include in your posts. You would want to carry out research to discover which ones your industry leaders are using on their posts and which ones get the highest engagements.
  • Make it happen in the DM: Of all the tips shared, this is the most crucial. It is a direct way of giving your brand the needed push for better visibility. It is actually a lot to explain, but the crux of it is to reach out to micro-influencers within your local community and offer a value free of charge. If they love what you did for them, they’ll give you a shout-out on their pages and that way, you’ll convert more users to customers.
